The lab, in plain words.

Every term you will meet on a certificate or a product page, defined in a sentence or two.

17 terms

CAS number

Chemistry

A unique registry number assigned to a chemical substance by the Chemical Abstracts Service.

Certificate of analysis (COA)

Testing

The lab report for one lot. It lists every test run on that lot, the method, the result and the release limit.

On the certificate →

Endotoxin

Testing

Fragments of bacterial cell walls. Screened by the LAL assay and reported against a release limit.

On the certificate →

HPLC

Testing

High-performance liquid chromatography. Separates a sample into its components so the target peptide's share can be measured as purity.

On the certificate →

ICP-MS

Testing

Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Detects trace metals such as lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury.

On the certificate →

LAL assay

Testing

Limulus amebocyte lysate test, the standard screen for bacterial endotoxin.

On the certificate →

Lot

Handling

One batch of a compound, synthesised and filled together. Every vial in a lot shares one certificate.

Lyophilised

Handling

Freeze-dried. Water is removed under vacuum, leaving a dry cake that is stable to ship and store.

Mass spectrometry (MS)

Testing

Measures molecular weight. Used to confirm identity: the measured mass must match the compound's theoretical mass.

On the certificate →

Molecular weight

Chemistry

The mass of one molecule in daltons (Da), calculated from its formula.

Net peptide content

Testing

How much peptide is actually in the vial, as opposed to purity, which is a share of what is there.

On the certificate →

Purity

Testing

The percentage of the sample that is the target compound, measured by HPLC peak area.

On the certificate →

Research use only (RUO)

Compliance

Sold for in-vitro laboratory research. Not for human or animal use, and not evaluated by the FDA.

Residue

Chemistry

One amino acid unit within a peptide chain. A 15-residue peptide has fifteen amino acids.

Sequence

Chemistry

The order of residues in a peptide, read from the N-terminus to the C-terminus.
